Debriefing
When you are living and working in a cross-cultural setting, you face many unique suppressors and situations not faced by your friends and family in your passport country. Having someone with whom to discuss your life circumstances who understands the settings you live in can be a tremendous benefit. Processing your experience more carefully or systematically than you might with a casual friend, or more deeply and confidentially than you might dare with others, is important to a profound understanding of your whole experience.
To an integrated understanding
It is wise to take time to reflect and integrate your experiences regularly, and therefore debriefing can be scheduled on a regular basis if you wish. However, Key times to reflect on your life situation are:
1) in your first term of service, especially in the first year,
2) after any significant life-change event, and
3) prior to leaving for extended home service.
Gaining a better understanding of what you are going through, and incorporating that into your own sense of identity and how you relate to others, is often key to a successful cross-cultural adjustment. Being prepared for what to expect in these and many other life situations can lead to more positive experiences, both where you are living and in a return to your home culture.
The Well has many care providers who are able to offer Debriefing services in Chiang Mai and elsewhere. Please contact us for an appointment when you are here or contact us to see if we might be able to come to where you are.
