Medical & Dental Care in Chiang Mai

This is a tool to help you begin to choose your medical providers in Chiang Mai, and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of good practitioners here.  The medical institutions and providers are listed because of ability to communicate in English, and because of the recommendation by both Thai and expat medical personnel.  As always when choosing medical care, each person needs to use judgement when selecting the appropriate provider.   Clinic hours may change (all times were checked March, 2011) so do call ahead to confirm whether a particular practitioner will be there.

Immunizations

Suandok, Chiangmai Ram I, Lanna and McCormick Hospitals all provide most of the vaccines which we require.  Overall McCormick Hospital may be cheaper for vaccines, but it often runs out of Typhoid vaccine and Lanna Hospital does not stock Typhoid vaccine. All four hospitals will sell vaccines to be taken away for administration elsewhere.

For Travellers going to Africa, yellow fever vaccine is required, and Nakorn Ping Hospital (located directly across from Suripwong Bookstore)  is the only provider in town who can give the vaccination and the international certification as it is an official international vaccination site.  Go directly to room #5, anytime from 8:30-noon Monday-Friday only.  Cost in 2011 is B550, and certificate of vaccination good for 10 years.  Please bring your passport as well.

Investigations

a.      Audiology

Services at Ram and Suandok, (must have a referral from doctor.)  Siam Hearing Care Center (053-282-933) also does hearing tests and makes hearing aids, but uses technicians, not physicians, but will do a test without a referral.  They are located at 257/1 Suthep Road directly across from the Chiangt Mai Provincial Public Health Office near the intersection of Suthep and Nimmanhaeman. Open 8:30am -1pm.

b.      Laboratory  tests

Chiangmai Ram I, Suandok, Lanna and McCormick Hospitals all provide good services.

Chiangmai Ram I Suandok, and Lanna Hospitals provide Hepatitis Bs Antibody results with titre, but McCormick Hospital does not.

Rabies Antibody testing with titre is available at Ram I Hospital (blood is sent to Bangkok).  Cost 900 baht.  Result available in 3 weeks.

Lanna Labs (not affiliated with the hospital) does blood work quickly and inexpensively (for example, a CBC is B50).  No doctor order is needed, but you need to be able to identify exactly what test you need.  Open 8am-8pm.  Located off Mahidol Road about 100 meters after the river heading to Airport Plaza- Go past the salmon colored building and take left into a small muubahn, (there is a sign in Thai).  The lab is about 100 feet into the muubahn on the right with a sign in English on the building.  Another hint to find--it is almost directly opposite Chiang Mai Land.  129/255 (053-275-131)  They will also email lab results to you, which is handy especially if you are sending results on to another care provider.

c.      X-ray, Ultrasound, ECG, Lung Function Tests

Good services at Ram I, Suandok, Lanna and McCormick Hospitals.  It is best to take a doctor’s letter/form requesting the specific tests.

One of the best radiology and ultrasound services is said to be provided by Dr Pim, Ram I Hospital.  Bookings should be made through X-ray Department, Ram I Hospital.

d.      Mammography

Highly recommended is Dr Malai, Sripat Building, Suandok Hospital.

Her clinic hours are Tuesday and Thursday 5-7 pm Tel: 053-946542 or 053-946 546 for appointment.  Cost 2,800 baht. (includes ultrasound)

Mammography is also available at Ram 1 Hospital on Monday – Saturday until 7pm.  Dr Pim is said to provide the best service here.  Tel: 053-053-920-300for appointment.  Cost 2,000 baht.(includes ultrasound)

Medicines

Medicines prescribed by hospital or clinic doctors can be bought at the hospital or clinic dispensary.  Otherwise medicines, including “prescription medicines” can be readily bought over the counter at many pharmacies, eg Boots, near Night Market; Siam Drug in the Chiang Inn Plaza; Minimart Pharmacy, opposite Diamond Riverside Hotel; Pharma Choice in basement of Central Department Store; Pharma Choice almost opposite McCormick Hospital; pharmacy in Makro; Changmoi Pharmacy, Changmoi Road (Naworat Market, opposite Bangkok Bank).

Chiropractors

Dr. Sankiat (US trained) practices at Holistic Health Systems  438/13 Ekami   (Sukhumvit 63)    (If you go north from the Ekami BTS), there is  a bridal shop on the right side between Ekamai  Soi 26 & 28.   Turn right into the lane, and the chiropractor is in a town house on the right side.  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.   www.thailandchiropractor.com  02 711 5102    081 27 312  The person recommending reports: “His approach to chiropractic is different than any I’ve experienced in 40 years and numerous locations.  Dr. Leoni employs several assistants.   I think they might be physiotherapists.   They were under his direction to do massage, ultrasound, stretching, heat or cold as needed.   As a result, the body is relaxed and prepared so that the actual adjustment is far more gentle than any other chiropractic treatment I’ve experienced.  The initial appointment is 1.5 hours, and subsequent appointments are 1 hour, so you can see that they really take the time to work with each patient.  Dr. Leoni also offers direction on exercise to correct problems.  The receipt that is issues is for ‘physio therapy services’.   Some insurance companies are more inclined to pay for physio rather than chiropractic.”_
